That Simple “Mmm” May Be Doing Something Remarkable Inside Your Nose

There is something almost universally calming about a long, gentle hum.

You may have noticed it yourself. A quiet “mmm” while thinking, humming along to music, or settling down at the end of a long day can make breathing feel slower and more deliberate.

For older adults, that simple experience may be especially interesting. Breathing can become more difficult with age, and conditions such as chronic sinus problems, asthma and other respiratory disorders can make people pay closer attention to how comfortably they breathe.

But there is an intriguing piece of physiology hiding behind that familiar sound.

Researchers have found that humming can dramatically increase the amount of nitric oxide measured in the nasal airway.

In a small study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers from Sweden found that nasal nitric oxide increased about 15-fold during humming compared with quiet exhalation. Only 10 healthy participants took part, so the finding is best viewed as an important physiological observation—not proof that humming treats disease.

So what is happening?

Your Sinuses Are More Active Than You Think

Behind your nose are several air-filled spaces called the paranasal sinuses.

For a long time, these spaces were mostly discussed in terms of facial anatomy, mucus drainage and sinus infections. Researchers now know that the tissues lining the nasal passages and sinuses are important sources of nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule involved in many processes throughout the body, including regulation of blood vessels and aspects of airway defense. The sinuses can contain substantially higher concentrations of nitric oxide than the lower airways.

That does not mean the sinuses are simply storing a giant reservoir of “health gas” waiting to be released.

The physiology is more complicated.

Tiny openings connect the sinuses with the nasal passages. During ordinary breathing, gas exchange between these spaces is relatively limited. Humming changes the movement of air.

And that appears to be the key.

Why Does Humming Produce Such a Big Increase?

When you hum with your lips closed, air movement around the nasal passages becomes oscillatory.

Researchers believe this movement rapidly mixes gas between the nasal passages and the paranasal sinuses, bringing more sinus-derived nitric oxide into the nasal airway where it can be measured. Subsequent studies have supported the idea that humming changes sinus gas exchange.

This is an important distinction.

The original research did not show that humming creates a completely new supply of nitric oxide or that it somehow fills the lungs with a therapeutic dose.

It showed that humming can temporarily change the movement and concentration of nitric oxide in the upper airway.

That is fascinating physiology—but it is not the same thing as a proven medical treatment.

Nitric Oxide Is Important to Respiratory Health

Nitric oxide has several recognized biological roles.

Within the respiratory system, it is involved in blood-vessel regulation and may contribute to local airway defense and normal ciliary activity. Researchers have also studied nasal nitric oxide as a potential biomarker in conditions involving the nose and sinuses.

However, this is where some online claims become misleading.

A rise in nasal nitric oxide during humming does not automatically mean that a person will have better blood oxygen levels, fewer infections or healthier lungs.

The evidence simply isn’t strong enough to make those promises.

One systematic review concluded that the clinical usefulness of nasal nitric oxide measurements for sinonasal disease remained uncertain, while more recent research continues to investigate how nitric oxide behaves in conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps.

What Could This Mean for Older Adults?

The most interesting possibility may not be that humming is a hidden cure.

It may simply be that slow, controlled vocal breathing is an accessible way to become more aware of breathing patterns.

For someone who spends much of the day breathing quickly, talking, sitting in front of a screen or breathing through the mouth because of nasal congestion, deliberately slowing down can feel noticeably different.

And humming naturally encourages a longer exhalation.

That can make it a pleasant relaxation practice, particularly before sleep or during a stressful part of the day.

But relaxation is different from treating a respiratory disease.

If an older adult has persistent shortness of breath, wheezing, chest discomfort, repeated sinus infections or a noticeable change in exercise tolerance, humming should not replace medical evaluation.

The “Vagus Nerve Reset” Claim Needs Caution

You may have seen claims that humming directly “activates the vagus nerve” and therefore resets the nervous system.

There is a reasonable physiological basis for studying slow breathing and autonomic responses. But the popular phrase “vagus nerve reset” makes the science sound much more certain than it is.

Humming involves controlled breathing, vocalization and vibration, and these factors may influence how relaxed a person feels.

That does not establish that the vibration is directly switching the nervous system from stress mode into a specific biological state.

The simplest explanation is often the most defensible: slow, comfortable breathing can be calming, and humming naturally encourages that pattern.

A Small Habit With a Very Interesting Research Story

The beauty of the humming research is not that it proves an ancient practice is secretly a miracle therapy.

It is that something as ordinary as making an “mmm” sound can reveal an unexpected feature of human respiratory physiology.

The original study demonstrated a striking 15-fold increase in nasal nitric oxide during humming. Later research has continued investigating the relationship between humming, sinus ventilation and nitric oxide.

That makes humming an intriguing subject for respiratory research.

But for now, the evidence supports a modest conclusion.

Humming changes the physiology of the upper airway. We know that.

Whether those changes translate into meaningful improvements in respiratory health, sinus disease or oxygen delivery is a much bigger question—and researchers are still working it out.

For older adults especially, that distinction matters.

A gentle hum can be a calming part of everyday life. It may also be a fascinating window into how the nose, sinuses and lungs communicate.

Just don’t mistake an intriguing laboratory finding for a proven treatment.

Sometimes the most interesting health discoveries begin with something we have been doing all along.
