Her family’s advocacy helped bring greater attention to informed consent, patient privacy, and the responsible use of biological samples in medical research.
Today, researchers work under much stricter ethical guidelines, and agreements between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Lacks family have established greater oversight for access to HeLa genomic data.
Henrietta Lacks’ legacy is about far more than a remarkable cell line. It is a reminder that medical progress depends not only on scientific discovery but also on respect, transparency, and trust between researchers and the people whose contributions make that research possible.
