Long hours on phones, tablets and laptops are changing how young people sit, move and use their necks. Here’s what “tech neck” really means—and what parents and teens can do about it.
For many teenagers, the smartphone is part of almost every part of the day. Messages arrive during breakfast, schoolwork happens on laptops, entertainment happens on phones and gaming can keep them sitting for hours. By the evening, it is not unusual to have spent much of the day looking at a screen.
The result can be familiar: a stiff neck, aching shoulders, headaches or a back that feels uncomfortable after sitting for too long.
The term “tech neck” has become a popular way of describing these complaints. It is not a formal medical diagnosis, and using a phone does not automatically damage the spine. But the underlying issue is real. Spending long periods in the same position—particularly with the head and neck bent forward—can place extra demand on muscles and joints.
For teenagers, the answer is not to eliminate technology. It is to change how they use it.
Why Looking Down Feels So Uncomfortable
The human head is relatively heavy, and the muscles of the neck constantly work to keep it balanced. When the head moves forward and downward, the mechanical demands on those muscles change.
A frequently cited 2014 paper estimated that the forces acting on the cervical spine increase substantially as the neck bends forward. However, those figures are biomechanical estimates rather than measurements of the actual load experienced by every teenager using a phone.
What matters in everyday life is simpler: holding one position for a long time can make muscles tired.
If someone spends an hour scrolling with their chin tucked toward their chest, the neck and upper-back muscles may remain active throughout that period. Repeat the same posture for several hours every day, and discomfort can become increasingly noticeable.
What Are Teenagers Actually Experiencing?
Neck and shoulder discomfort are among the most common complaints associated with prolonged device use.
Research involving children and adolescents has linked extensive or problematic electronic-device use with musculoskeletal symptoms, although studies vary and cannot always prove that screens themselves are the direct cause.
Other factors matter too.
A teenager who spends several hours sitting may also be sleeping poorly, exercising less, carrying a heavy school bag, studying at an unsuitable desk or taking very few movement breaks. All of these can contribute to aches and stiffness.
This is why blaming every neck problem on a phone can miss the bigger picture.
The Bigger Concern: Too Much Sitting
Perhaps the most important health issue is not the angle of the neck at all. It is how much time young people spend being sedentary.
Children and adolescents need regular physical activity for healthy development. The World Health Organization recommends that young people aged 5 to 17 get an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day across the week. It also recommends limiting prolonged sedentary time, particularly recreational screen time.
A screen can make it easy to lose track of time. Twenty minutes can become an hour, and an hour can become an entire evening.
The solution does not have to be dramatic. Standing up, walking around, stretching, playing outside or taking part in sport all provide opportunities to interrupt long periods of sitting.
Does Tech Neck Permanently Change the Spine?
This is where online discussions often become exaggerated.
There is not strong evidence that ordinary smartphone use is causing teenagers to develop the kind of spinal degeneration normally associated with old age. Nor does looking down at a phone automatically flatten the cervical spine or cause permanent structural damage.
Poor posture can contribute to discomfort, and some spinal conditions can affect children and teenagers for many different reasons. Genetics, growth, injury, underlying medical conditions and other factors can all play a role.
Persistent symptoms deserve attention rather than being dismissed as “just bad posture.”
A teenager should be evaluated by a healthcare professional if neck or back pain is severe, keeps returning, interferes with normal activities, follows an injury, or occurs with symptoms such as weakness, significant numbness or other concerning changes.
How to Make Screen Time Easier on the Body
The good news is that teenagers do not need perfect posture.
Instead, aim for variety.
Raise the screen when possible. Holding a phone closer to eye level can reduce the amount of time spent looking sharply downward. When using a laptop for long periods, a suitable stand and separate keyboard can make a more comfortable setup.
Change position regularly. There is no single perfect posture that needs to be maintained all day. Moving between sitting and standing and taking short movement breaks can be more realistic than trying to sit rigidly upright.
Give your eyes a break. Extended screen use can contribute to digital eye strain. The 20-20-20 approach—looking about 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—is commonly recommended as a simple way to reduce visual fatigue.
Move every day. Walking, cycling, sports, dancing, strength exercises and active play all count. Regular movement is much more important for long-term health than maintaining a perfectly straight neck while using a phone.
Pay attention to sleep. Late-night screen use can push bedtime later and make it harder to maintain a healthy sleep routine. Keeping phones away from the bed can make it easier to disconnect at night.
The Goal Isn’t Perfect Posture
Teenagers are not damaging their bodies every time they look down at a screen.
The more useful message is that the human body was designed to move, and modern technology makes it remarkably easy to stay in one position for far too long.
A phone is not the enemy. Neither is a laptop.
The problem begins when screen time quietly replaces movement, sleep, outdoor activity and regular breaks.
Rather than worrying about every degree of neck flexion, encourage teenagers to change positions, move frequently, build active habits and listen when their bodies are uncomfortable.
That approach is less dramatic than declaring an epidemic of damaged spines—but it is much closer to what current evidence actually tells us.
