Around the middle of the afternoon, something familiar happens.
Your concentration starts slipping. Your eyes feel heavy. The simplest task suddenly requires more effort. You reach for coffee, push through the tiredness and tell yourself you’ll rest later.
Modern life often rewards that approach.
But researchers studying sleep and brain health are increasingly interested in what happens when we allow the body to rest instead.
One of the most talked-about studies came from researchers at University College London and the University of the Republic in Uruguay. The team investigated whether habitual daytime napping might be connected to differences in brain structure.
Their findings were intriguing: people with genetic characteristics associated with habitual daytime napping tended to have a larger total brain volume.
The estimated difference was equivalent to approximately 2.6 to 6.5 years of age-related brain-volume difference.
That headline sounds dramatic.
But the reality is more nuanced—and understanding that distinction matters.
What the Researchers Actually Found
The study used information from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database containing data from hundreds of thousands of people.
Researchers examined genetic variants associated with the tendency to nap and used a statistical method called Mendelian randomization to investigate whether habitual napping might have a causal relationship with brain structure.
For the main analysis, genetic data and brain MRI measurements were available for about 35,000 people.
The broader UK Biobank sample used in the research included 378,932 participants aged 40 to 69.
The researchers found a modest association between genetic liability for habitual daytime napping and larger total brain volume.
That is interesting because brain volume generally decreases as people age.
However, the study did not establish that taking naps directly prevents brain shrinkage.
It also found no meaningful association with hippocampal volume, reaction time or visual memory.
So the headline “skipping naps might shrink your brain” goes further than the evidence allows.
Why Brain Volume Gets So Much Attention
The brain changes throughout life.
As people grow older, some degree of reduction in brain volume is normal. Researchers study these structural changes because accelerated brain atrophy can occur alongside various neurological and cognitive disorders.
Total brain volume is therefore an important research marker.
But it is not a simple score for intelligence, memory or overall brain health.
A larger brain volume does not automatically mean someone has better cognition, and a smaller volume does not automatically mean someone has dementia.
That is why the nap study should be viewed as one piece of a much larger puzzle.
The researchers themselves described the findings as evidence of a modest causal association, while emphasizing the need for further studies using different populations and methods.
Why Might a Nap Matter?
Scientists are still working out exactly why daytime sleep might be connected with brain health.
One possibility is that sleep gives the brain an opportunity to recover from the demands of prolonged wakefulness.
Sleep is involved in memory processing, attention, emotional regulation and numerous physiological processes.
If someone regularly gets insufficient or poor-quality nighttime sleep, a short daytime nap may provide temporary relief from sleepiness and improve alertness.
Previous research has found that short naps can improve certain aspects of cognitive performance in the hours immediately afterward. UCL researchers noted that these short-term benefits are separate from the structural brain findings in their study.
There is another important possibility, however.
People who naturally nap may differ from non-nappers in ways that are difficult to completely capture, even with sophisticated genetic analysis.
That is why researchers continue to investigate the relationship rather than declaring naps a proven brain-preservation treatment.
The “2.6 to 6.5 Years Younger” Finding Needs Context
This is probably the most eye-catching number from the study.
Researchers estimated that the difference in total brain volume between people genetically predisposed to habitual napping and those who were not was equivalent to around 2.6 to 6.5 years of aging.
But this does not mean that taking a 20-minute nap makes your brain biologically 6 years younger.
It is a comparison based on differences in brain volume.
It also does not mean that someone who never naps is accelerating their brain aging by six years.
That distinction is essential when translating scientific research into health headlines.
If You Want to Nap, Keep It Simple
For people who naturally become sleepy during the afternoon, a brief nap may be a reasonable way to recover some alertness.
Sleep experts commonly suggest keeping daytime naps relatively short and taking them earlier rather than later in the afternoon, particularly if nighttime sleep is easily disrupted.
UCL researchers noted that previous studies have suggested naps of around 30 minutes or less can provide short-term cognitive benefits while being less likely to interfere with nighttime sleep.
A practical approach is to treat a nap as a short rest, rather than an opportunity to sleep for hours.
If you regularly need long daytime naps simply to function, however, that may be worth paying attention to.
Persistent excessive daytime sleepiness can sometimes accompany insufficient nighttime sleep, sleep disorders, medication effects or other health issues.
Don’t Sacrifice Nighttime Sleep for a Daytime Nap
This may be the most important takeaway.
A nap should complement healthy nighttime sleep—not replace it.
If staying up late scrolling, studying or working leaves you exhausted the next afternoon, a nap may temporarily make you feel better, but it doesn’t erase the underlying sleep shortage.
Healthy brain aging is influenced by many factors, including adequate sleep, regular physical activity, a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco, and managing cardiovascular risk factors. UCL researchers also highlight sufficient, good-quality sleep as part of a broader approach to maintaining cognitive health.
Rest Is Not the Enemy of Productivity
The culture of constant productivity can make a midday nap feel wasteful.
But needing a little rest is not necessarily a sign of laziness.
For some people, a brief afternoon nap may improve alertness and provide a useful break from mental fatigue. And the emerging research linking habitual napping with brain structure makes the subject worth investigating further.
Still, science has not given us a prescription for a “brain-saving nap.”
The strongest message is simpler.
Don’t panic if you don’t nap. Don’t force yourself to nap if you aren’t tired. And don’t treat a nap as a substitute for consistently good nighttime sleep.
The fascinating finding from the UCL-led research is that habitual napping and larger total brain volume appear to be connected—but exactly why, and whether naps themselves produce long-term protection, remains an open scientific question.
Sometimes the healthiest response to an afternoon slump isn’t another cup of coffee.
It may simply be recognizing that your body is asking for a little recovery time.
